Libra is the meeting and balancing of the soul and personality. In the zodiac wheel, which represents one’s spiritual journey or personality unfoldment depending on the perspective, Libra is the point of meditative contemplation, stillness, and balancing of the forces impressed upon humanity collectively and individually. It is a stage of inaction and thorough mental processing hence why this sign can be seen as passive or indecisive but also as diplomatic and fair. The balancing of the scales is not automatically done but rather through the conscious efforts of the individual, state, or nation.
I was inspired by the following excerpt about Libra from Esoteric Astrology by Alice A. Bailey to write this article:
“The first aspect of will or power expresses itself in this sign as Law, as legislation, legality, justice; the second aspect manifests as the relation between the pairs of opposites (of which the scales are the symbol) and upon the physical plane shows itself as Sex; the third aspect demonstrates as concretised energy and thus we call Money…The third aspect is, as you know, the creator aspect and the energy which produces the outer tangible plane of manifestation—the form side of life…The whole process is accounted for by the activity of the three rulers of Libra: Venus, Uranus, and Saturn.”
Because Bailey did not elaborate too much on this concept, I’ve taken it upon myself to do so, or atleast try to.
As stated previously, these three aspects parallel Libra’s planetary rulers. To me, they are as follows:
- Venus = sex (traditional ruler)
- Saturn = law (hierarchal ruler in EA and exaltation point)
- Uranus = money (esoteric ruler)
Venus – Sex
I’ve talked about Venus in another article in the context of love, so it may seem somewhat contradictory for Venus to also represent sex. I’m connecting Venus to sex because sex is often used as an expression of love or a replacement to love. To Bailey, sex is the balance (Libra) of the feminine principle and masculine principle which are expressions of divinity or God. Socially, sex is understood as both the act of physical intercourse or union between a man and woman and the biological identification of a human body, the latter being an attempt at identifying the manifestation of the feminine/masculine principles of divinity in the physical characteristics of humans.
Saturn – Law
Law can be understood as both the law of the land (government) and the law of nature or natural law (science or mystic). Saturn for a long time has been connected to law and is referred to as the bringer of justice and the symbol of karma in mythologies such as the Hindu god Shani who placed boons or “blessings” on other deities that are objectively good or bad, and Cronos whose karma for overthrowing his father for power was to suffer the same fate by his son. Like karma, the law is supposed to give consequences that match the action, whether it is a positive or negative thing is subjective. At all times, humans are trying to abide by both law of the land and of nature.
Uranus – Money
Uranus is what you make it to be, just like money. You can make the money or let it make you. It can change the current reality to something better or worse and is the source of some current world problems as well as the source of the progression of humanity. In the words of Wu-Tang clan, “Cash rules everything around me.” The aspect of change is present in the handling of money; the exchange of the paper or energy to receive something in return. I likened this exchange to that of the relationship of an individual to God, or the soul to the mind and/or body. There’s a give and take, push and pull going on with money which Libra coded.
What causes imbalance within these three aspects, and how can it be fixed? Is it by meeting money where the law is, or law where money is? Or is it by understanding the purpose of sex and creating balance between law and money from this perspective instead? It’s not for me or any single human to decide, it’s up to the entire human race to collectively decide.
